Around one third of adults in the UK suffer from painful joints.

The most common areas to be affected are the knees, shoulders, hips and ankles.

We use yoga therapy to help our clients in SW London to reduce and manage joint pain.

I prepared this short practice to manage and ease the symptoms of painful joints:

  1. Alternate knee squeezes:

This stretch is great for the hips, lower back and knees.

Lie on your back with a legs out straight and draw your right knee in towards the chest with both hands, keeping the left leg extended.? Take 3 breaths and keep your shoulders and face relaxed.? Soften your whole body.? Change legs and repeat until each leg has been drawn in 5 times.

  2. Cat-Cow:

This pose mobilises the spine, pelvis and shoulder girdle.

Begin on all fours with your hands underneath your shoulders and your knees under your hips, then point your toes backwards so top of the feet are pressing into the mat.? As you inhale lift and open your chest into your cow stretch.? As you exhale reverse the movement and round the upper back into your cat stretch.? Alternate between these two for 20 or more complete breaths.

  3. Bound angle pose:

This stretch helps with tension in the hips and helps keep the pelvis mobile.

Sit with the soles of your feet together, legs bent with knees pointing outwards and spine straight (if that is uncomfortable you can sit on a blanket or yoga block).? Bring your hands around your feet, then allow your knees to lift up a bit as you inhale and release them to the floor as you exhale.? Synchronise the breath with movement and repeat for 20 or more complete breaths.

While practising this yoga for joint pain listen to your body and notice how each pose makes you feel.

The key to integrating yoga into your life and being able to use it in times of need is developing a regular practice.
